Pattern Of 1851 Bayonet Scabbard With Frog
By:  Frederick C. Gaede

In 1851 a General Order was issued that prescribed all belting in the U.S. Army would be black.  This included the frog of the bayonet scabbard, and many of the whitened buff frogs of scabbards on hand were dyed to conform to the new regulations. Henceforth newly constructed scabbard would be made with blackened buff frogs.

Initially the 1851 scabbard looked exactly like the 1840 pattern, except for the blackened buff frog.  It, too, was made in two lengths to accommodate the two muskets used by the Army at the time. However, in 1857 the width of the infantry waist belt was increased to 1.9 inches, and the opening of the frog was correspondingly widened. Thus the 1851 bayonet scabbard were used in four different versions, two for length and two for frog opening.
