Cigar Travel Case
As a designer and craftsman, I’m always on the search for product ideas that can fill the needs of my customers. Some ideas are not the best, while others are a perfect match with the Duvall Leather brand. Our new Cigar Travel Case is a prime example of a great idea born at the right time!
Recently while enjoying a glass of scotch with friends, the natural progression into cigar smoking occurred. Everyone pulled out these rather large, faux leather cases full of cigars, cutters, and lighters.
Cigars were lit, conversation continued, and the scotch went down easy. As more people joined our conversation, the small table we were all seated around became rather filled with large cigar cases, empty glasses, and ash trays. One of the gentlemen of the group spoke up, “you can tell our wives buy our cigar cases, they’re as big as their purses!” Laughter erupted, because every cigar travel case in the room had been given as a gift from their wife.
It was true! I never even noticed until someone said something, but the case everyone was carrying was way too big for an evening scotch and cigar event. Someone said, “Hey, maybe Nick can make a smaller case for us?!” I spoke up, “I think we can make a more streamline version of this, we definitely have some unique leather to make cigar cases from!”
Everyone spoke up with their ideas and the general consensus was that the case needed to carry three cigars, a cutter, and a lighter. Talk of this concept cigar travel case was exciting and soon I had lots of ideas floating around in my head for a future product design.
A few weeks later, I finally found time to work on truly designing a beautiful luxury leather cigar travel case. My first stop was a local cigar shop, where I purchased samples of cigars for size purposes, Churchills, Robusto, etc. Back to the workshop I went and several hours later the product was just about complete. It was exactly what my buddies needed.
The next day, my team of craftspeople and I perfected the case! We conquered simple details like using hook & loop fastening material to the cigar closure strap, making it easier to hold the cigars in place. We developed small divider strips, integrated into the closure strap to separate the cigars for better travel safety. With all the construction details out of the way, the only thing left to do was select the leather. Nothing but the best, full grain cowhide and bison leather, the ultimate pairing.
After a few days, we had produced a handful of good samples and just in time for another social evening of scotch and cigars. Knowing I was bringing cigar travel case samples, everyone was excited to see my creation. The response was right on the button, it was exactly what they needed! A slim, three cigar case with a cutter that zipped closed. What is interesting, is that no one noticed that the cigar case did not have a lighter holder! I actually had to mention it. Because everyone has a unique lighter, I’d never be able to accommodate all the different styles of cigar lighter. We were also trying to make the leather cigar case as compact as possible. No one person in the ten person group even cared that it didn’t have a lighter holder.
And the best cigar travel case is born! Crafted of full grain leather, by hand, in our Northeastern Pennsylvania workshop, this will be your go to cigar case for years to come. It fits easily into a golf bag pocket, jacket or vest pocket, or simply in your hand.
